The stability of the nucleus in the atom is dependent on the number of protons and neutrons that it carries with it. There must be a balance between these protons and neutrons to determine whether or not the nucleus will be stable or not. Too many protons or neutrons will disrupt this balance, therefore making the nucleus unstable. And likewise too little protons or neutrons will alter the balance of the nucleus as well.
